Bull Bay (Porth Llechog)
The closest beach to Amlwch, a couple of miles west of town, is a shingle-and-rock cove known in English as Bull Bay and in Welsh as Porth Llechog — also the most northerly village in Wales. There's a slipway, good rock pools, and it's popular for fishing, diving and snorkelling. There's no lifeguard service, so take the usual sea-sense precautions. The Wales Coast Path runs directly through the village, past two pubs, on its way further west to Cemaes.
Above the bay, Bull Bay Golf Club has an 18-hole clifftop course dating from 1913, open to visitors as well as members — reputedly the most northerly golf course in Wales.
Dulas Bay (Traeth Dulas)
About four miles south-east of Amlwch, Traeth Dulas is the estuary beach of the Afon Goch, with a car park at its western end. It's a quieter, more low-key spot than the beaches around Benllech and Red Wharf Bay further south — worth knowing that it floods with the incoming tide, so check timings before you head down.
Cemaes Bay
Around six miles west of Amlwch by road, Cemaes has two beaches: the sandy Traeth Mawr, with a promenade, rock pools and public toilets, and the smaller Traeth Bach near the old harbour. It's the most visitor-facing of the beaches on this stretch of coast, with shops and cafes close by, though again there's no lifeguard patrol.
Traeth Lligwy
South of Amlwch near Moelfre, Traeth Lligwy is reachable via the coastal path or by a slightly longer inland drive. The nearest lifeboat cover is Moelfre RNLI station, a little over a mile away, rather than an on-beach lifeguard.
A note on awards: older guides to this stretch of coast sometimes mention Blue Flag or Tidy Britain beach awards from the 1990s. Anglesey currently holds no Blue Flag beaches, and none of the beaches above appear on the current Keep Wales Tidy Green Coast Award list — the local authorities opted out of the Blue Flag scheme some years ago over assessment costs. None of that reflects on water quality; it's simply not part of how these beaches are currently badged.
